What Makes a Limited Edition Worth Considering?

A limited edition is a fixed, authorized group of prints. The edition size tells you the maximum number in that release. It does not tell you, by itself, whether the work is authentic, desirable, or likely to hold value.

A useful listing should make the edition easy to understand before you buy. Look for the artist, title, medium, paper, edition size, individual number, signature details, production date, and the documentation supplied with the print.

Declared Edition Size The number after the slash shows the size of the standard edition. Any artist proofs or other proofs should be described separately.
Artist Authorization A hand signature can support the work's connection to the artist, but some legitimate editions use labels, stamps, publisher records, or certificates instead.
Production Details The listing should identify the print process, paper, dimensions, printer or publisher when relevant, and whether the dimensions refer to the image or full sheet.
Condition and Documentation Condition, provenance, invoices, publisher records, and consistent edition details matter more than a dramatic authenticity claim with nothing behind it.
